FAQ

  • What does Smartphone mean?
Smartphone is a mobile phone which is superior to a feature phone: It has an operating system, a stronger microprocessor, and also many features which can not be found on feature phones. A smartphone, more simply, is a blend of a mobile phone, a PC, a laptop, a GPS receiver, an MP3 Player, an FM Radio and a memory stick.
  • What is rooting?
Rooting is the process when you get administrator privileges in your Android OS. This is taken from the Linux base Kernel used for the development of Android. It is like Administrator in Windows and Superuser in Linux.
  • What does ROM mean?
A device's ROM is it's computer memory which is  read-only on which it's operating system is located. It contains the files that allow your device to boot up (start). Unlike RAM (random access memory), it is not lost when the phone is powered off.
  • Why should I install a Custom ROM?
Android is 100% Open Source, meaning those who sell Android devices, such as Orange, can change the Android code and add their own user interfaces and apps, whilst removing old apps.

However, these additional apps and changes will often slow down the phone and remove important features and apps, leaving an Operating System which doesn’t really represent Google Android.

That’s where custom ROMs step in - the aim of a custom ROM is to create a clean, unbranded, stable version of Android – in other words, 100% pure Google Android without the 3rd party apps and network bloatware.

At the moment, custom ROMs are currently the only way to get Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onto your Orange Stockholm. These custom ROMs are based on official Android builds, which are shipped with the phone by carriers in other countries. Using these builds, developers have produced versions of Android 2.3 / Android 4.0 that will work on all variations of the Orange Stockholm / Huawei U8180.

It is near impossible to brick your phone whilst following our guide on how to install Android 2.3 / Android 4.0. It can be done straight from your phone, and as long as you follow the steps in the correct order you will be up and running Android 2.3 / 4.0 in no time!
  • What is CyanogenMOD?
Quoting CyanogenMod Wiki:

"CyanogenMod (/sɪˈænoʊdʒəŋmäd/) is a customized, aftermarket firmware distribution for select Android devices.
Intended as a replacement for the software (also known as the "firmware" or "ROM") that comes factory installed on your smartphone, CyanogenMod is based on the Android Open Source Project – the same base software used in all Android devices. However, CyanogenMod offers several benefits over the pre-installed firmware, including vastly flexible interface and customization, a wider set of new features, and sometimes significant improvements in performance.

CyanogenMod's features may allow you to bypass software limitations imposed by carriers, which may prevent you from using the handset in a manner that they do not support. Such features include, but not limited to, the ability to overclock the device's CPU, tether the device to your computer, or fully back up the device to your SD Card. "
