Tethering your Orange Stockholm

Tethering is when you use your phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. This is a fairly easy function to set up, over which you can transform your device into a Wi-Fi router when you are in a location where you don't have Internet connection for your laptop. What is more important is the fact that Orange Stockholm supports USB and also Wi-Fi tethering, a very nice addition if I might say. In order to use this function of your phone you need to have mobile data enabled on your phone.
Mobile Internet Connection is enabled (button in the centre of the Power Control widget)

  • There are two types: USB Tethering (Connect a USB cable to your phone and laptop and it's done)
Portable Wi-Fi hotspot (In this case you don't need a connection cable)

USB Tethering

First of all: Go to settings
                   Wireless & networks
                   Tethering & portable hotspot
Then connect your phone to your laptop and tick USB Tethering.
It's simple as that.

Portable Wi-Fi hotspot

First of all: Go to settings
                   Wireless & networks
                   Tethering & portable hotspot
                   Tick Portable Wi-Fi hotspot
Go to: Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings
           Configure Wi-Fi hotspot
Configuring your Wi-Fi hotspot
There give a Name to your hotspot
                  Select WPA2 PSK security
And finally give a Password for your hotspot

And there you go. You have your own Wi-Fi hostpot. Connect with your laptop to it!

Information about unlocking your Orange Stockholm

One of the main advantages when we "unlock" our phone is that it will work with any SIM card, from any carrier (telecommunication service provider) in any country, but the process of unlocking can take up quite a lot from our precious time.

Telecommunication service providers often lock the phones which they sell or include in certain services because of their desire to increase customer loyalty by hampering their free movement from one network to another, blocking those phones into their own network.

Your phone is locked if you insert a SIM card from another network provider and it asks for a network unlock code (not to be confused with PIN numer).

Orange Stockholm as it name shows (a device from the network provider called Orange) is a locked or blocked device. It's a fact. But on the other hand if you own a Huawei U8180, it is probably not locked.

So the question becomes available: How do you unlock your Orange Stockholm?

Well, you can't unlock your phone by installing CyanogenMod or any custom or stock ROM, nor by any known software, nor by rooting the phone (in that case you can only uninstall branded software). I tried it, so you don't have to.

It can not be unlocked by those so called free unlock code generators, which generate a code depending on the IMEI code of your device. I tried a dozen of them only ending up with a blocked phone, not willing to show the panel in which to enter the unlock code because of the large amount of incorrect unlock codes I entered into my phones.

In the end your asking: Is it actually possible to unlock it?

The answer is: Yes! The problem is that it is not free. There are many offers on the Internet where you only have to type your IMEI code, I'm not going to advertise them because they differ for every country/region, and after paying the fee which is about 10 euro or about 10 pound they give you the unlock code by SMS or e-mail, depending on the type of the service. Or you can also check out your friendly neighbourhood mobile phone kiosk, or GSM Shop for the same amount of money. You can get your phone's IMEI by calling *#06# with your mobile phone.

Remember: Don't waste your time with free unlock code generators, because at the moment none of them work. Paying 10 euro for the unlocking of your Orange Stockholm isn't much, and this way you won't end up with a blocked device which would cost more to unlock.

Overclocking your phone in CyanogenMod

As I told you before overclocking is a process when you change the speed of you phones processor.
This sounds like a great thing to do, but in reality this activity can make your phone a bit unstable. If you follow everithing as written here, you don't have to worry about a thing.
The interesting fact in CyanogenMod 7 is that it comes preinstalled with overclocking software; also the fact that this ROM is rooted by default helps our cause greatly.
So, finally, the steps to do it:
1st Step: Go to menu.
2nd Step: To to settings.
3rd Step: Go to CyanogenMod settings.
4th Step: Select Performance .
5th Step: Tap on CPU settings.
Minimum value is okay at 122 MHz, because it is advised to use a low frequency too, in order to allow the processor to swich to this value when not in use, conserving energy, prolonging lifetime.
Maximum value should be set to around 600 MHz, preferably this value, because of safety and security reasons. The device is fully functional at this clock rate, without any stability issues. Of course you can increase the clock speed for experimenting, but in this case you risk of winding up with an unstable and faulty OS at demanding processes.

Backing up your ROM

Experimenting with many ROMs and programs comes with the increased probability of system failure. So it is very important to keep system configuration, but also stuff generally known as information backed up on our SD card, computer, cloud, external HDD.
In order to back ROM up, you need to root your phone, download and install ROM Manager. For more information about rooting check the respective post.

For those of you with CyanogenMod 7 installed on your device: You don't have to install ROM Manager because it is already istalled and your phone is already rooted. Just follow the steps.

Steps:
  • Start ROM Manager.
  • Scroll down to the Backup and Restore section.
  • Select Backup Current ROM.
  • Set a name for the Backup.
  • Wait for the Backup to finish and for the phone to reboot.
  • Optionally: Save Backup folder to PC. ( Connect SD card to PC and copy the folder of your backup from SD card directory: clockworkmod/backup/name of your backup.
Backup and Restore section
To Restore Backup:

Installing CyanogenMod 9 on your Orange Stockholm. [NOT Advised]

After reading this tutorial you will be able to install CyanogenMod 9 (abreviated CM 9) on your Orange Stockholm device. CM 9  is based on the latest Android operating system callled Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.0.3.
CyanogenMod 9 homescreen
CyanogenMod 9 Power Control

This ROM isn't a fully woking one so I do not recommend installing it on your device, it is mainly for demonstration purposes, only to show people that development of further O.S is possible and highly probable. This ROM is brought by subpsyke, a developer at [XDA - developers] and valuable forum member. This development is in alpha phase, hopefully in the near future a working version of CyanogenMod 9 will be released for the wider public.

So, the steps to install CM 9:

1st Step: Root your phone, after rooting, you should install ROM Manager. if you don't know how to do it check the following post: Root.

2nd Step: Open the ROM Manager application. Ensure that you have the latest ClockworkMod build by checking the version information in the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery section, and updating if necessary.

3rd Step: Select Download ROM, after that select psyke83. Select ClockwordMod 9, and press the Download button. You will see a popup: ROM Addons. Place a checkmark beside the entry for the Google Apps (even if you already installed the package on your current ROM).

When the download completes, you'll see a ROM Pre-Installation dialogue.

Select: Wipe Data & Cache, which means that everything will be wiped from your device, so it is advised to backup your ROM.

Press OK to allow ROM Manager to reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery and perform the installation. When installation finishes, the phone will automatically reboot.

Important things to know about CM 9:

Working:

  • Accelerated 2D rendering
  • Touchscreen (including multitouch)
  • WiFi
  • GPS
  • Sensors
  • Telephony
  • Mobiledata
  • Audio
  • Bluetooth
  • SD card mounting
Broken:
  • USB & wireless tethering
  • Video encoders/decoders (which also means that Youtube doesn't work)
  • Camera / video camera
  • Random crashes due to missing kernel feature (will be fixed later)

How to choose which version of CyanogenMod to install

First of all if you don't know what CyanogenMod is, you should check out the FAQ page or the official CyanogenMod site

There are currently two main CyanogenMod ports available for this type of phone (Orange Stockholm), the first one, called CyanogenMod 7 is based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and the second one called CyanogenMod 9 and is based on Android 4.0 (the newest edition of Android OS) also known as Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).

These both are unofficial custom ROMs based specifically developed for Huawei U8180 by the user community of CyanogenMod and [XDA]/MadTeam, centred around user subpsyke, main developer.

CyanogenMod 7 Homescreen 1

CyanogenMod 7 Homescreen 2
Cm 7 was ported for Huawei U8160 first, because official Cm support was not available for other Huawei phones except Huawei U8220 (which is still the only officialy supported device); thanks to the fact that there is not much difference between U8160 and U8180 the attempt to port this version from the first type of phone to the latter was done without any difficulty, thank God.

CyanogenMod 9
CyanogenMod 9 Homescreen

While they both are available for download and installation on your Stockholm I do not recommend using CyanogenMod 9 yet, because of the fact that it is still in development and not suitable for daily use. (phone calls can not be initiated or received and so on) Hopefully in the close future this version will be successfully developed into a stable state.

    Stock ROM for Huawei

By following this tutorial you can reset your phone into to state it was when you purchased it, installing the Official Huawei ROM. It resets everything, so PLEASE BACKUP EVERY SENSITIVE DATA YOU HAVE ON THE PHONE!

    Procedure:

1st Step: Download the stock ROM from this link. There is also a guide in the download if you find this hard to follow.(This ROM is from the Australian telecommunications company called Optus, it will not block your phone to this operator)

2nd Step: Format your SD card into FAT32 ( if unsure, it is best you leave it the way it is)

3rd Step: Create a folder "dload" on to the root of your SD card.

4th Step: Extract the UPDATE.APP from the stock ROM and place it in "dload"

5th Step: Power off your phone with SD card inside.

6th Step: Power on by pressing Volume Up+Volume Down+Power Buttons; if done properly you will see a progress bar saying UPDATING. After it's done it will reboot automatically. Your phone will be good as new! (Hopefully more vendors will be added)

    Overclocking your phone

Overclocking is the process when you speed up your phone's microprocessor. This can be achieved by various programs which can be downloaded from the Android Market.

Choose a program from the list ( I recommend OverclockWidget), install it. Add it to your homescreen as a widget (By pressing your screen until a list pops up, press the "Widgets" button, then find and add the "OverclockWidget"), set both markers to 600000 Hz.

Congratulations! Now your phone is functioning with a 600 MHz microprocessor. Notice the increase in performance.

Note that in order to use this function, your phone should be rooted. If you don't know how to do it, check the following post.
